UPDATE 23rd June 2014

The following were thye €20 winners at the most recent Club Lotto draw which was held in Kate Lavin’s: Pat and Angela Leonard, , James and Eilish Goldrick, Al and Mary Cunningham, Tara Brady, Gillian Cleary and Darren O’Connor. The house prize was won by Tom Browne. The jackpot wasn’t won and it will stand at €6,500 at next Saturday night’s draw which will be held in the Patrick’s Well with Team E in charge. It was a mixed week for the McGovern Directional Drilling Seniors. They suffered a disappointing defeat to Padraig Pearses in Pairc an Phiarsaigh on Wednesday evening in the O’Rourke Cup. In a game where Boyle struggled to reach the heights of the previous weekends championship win over Elphin they failed to put any sustained period of play together. The first 20 minutes of the game was a tight affair with a lot of the play concentrated around the middle third, but Pearses opened some daylight when a short Boyle kick out was intercepted and Pearses punished the mistake to the back of the net. The half time score was  Pearses 1-6 Boyle 0-2 with a free from Donie and a long range point from tadhg Lowe being the Boyle scores. The second half saw Boyle briefly rally with points from Tadhg Mckenna and Enda Smith but then the wheels came off as Boyle had both Michael Hanmore and Aaron Sharkey dismissed, the former somewhat questionably. Boyle added a goal from Enda but Pearses pulled away and added a second goal late on to leave the final score Pearses 2-12 Boyle 1-4.  Team was C. Smith, A. Sharkey, D. Callaghan, K. Cox, M. Hanmore, S. Purcell, T. McKenna (0-1), R, Hanmore, E. Smith(1-1), T. Lowe(0-1), D. Smith (0-1), J. Suffin, M O'Donohoe, D O'Connor, M McGovern with C Goldrick, S, Tonry, B, Furey, Thanks to those who made the long trip to support the team in Woodmount on a baking hot evening, Junior, Barry, Tony et. al.....The team bounced back in style to record a good win over St. Faithleachs in the same competition in the Abbey Park on Sunday. In contrast with the Pearses match the team managed to again reach  the heights of the Elphin championship match although not initially as they went 4 points to one down, in the first 15 minutes. 2 goals from Donie and Darren O'Connor saw Boyle gain the ascendency and they never looked back going in 2-6 to 5 in front at the break. The second half saw Boyle consolidate their lead and saw the full compliment of 6 subs introduced including Liam Conroy who tagged on the score of the day from either a horrendous 45 or a subline spot from Donie from a 45! Goals were added in the second half from Darren again, and Sean Purcell but it was also important that at the opposite end the team managed to secure its first clean sheet of the campaign.  Some good performances but overall man of the match was Killian Cox who was excellent throughout. Team - C. Smith, B. Furey, D. Callaghan, K. Cox, S. Tonry, S. Purcell(0-1), A. Sharkey, R, Hanmore, E. Smith(0-1), T. Lowe(0-1), D. Smith(1-3), J. Suffin, M O'Donohoe(0-2), D O'Connor(2-0), M McGovern with C Goldrick, J. Sweeney, P, Lavin, C. Tivnan, L, Conroy(0-1), L. Brennan and T McGarrity   They are expected to have a short break from competitive action for a few weeks as the County seniors prepare for qualifier action. The Cooney Motors/ Cooney’s Centra Juniors will travel to Kilglass on Wednesday to play the home side in the Division 4 League at 8pm. Thanks to all who helped with stewarding for Sundays O’Rourke Cup game and the thrilling Connacht Intermediate Ladies Semi Final between Sligo and Roscommon on Friday evening last. Best wishes to Evan McGrath and his Roscommon Minor colleagues in the Connacht Minor Football Semi Final with Leitrim on Saturday next. Any coach who has received notification of garda clearance recently is asked to present same to Jan Flanagan or Martin Dolan.

UPDATE 16th June 2014

Best wishes to the St Joseph’s Boys National Schools and to the girls of Scoil na nAingeal Naofa who compete on Tuesday in Ballyleague in the Cumann na mBunscoil Football Finals. The Boys Final is at 5pm and the Girls Final is at 6pm. Well done to Peter Bolger and his management team and the entire panel of the McGovern Directional Drilling Seniors on their excellent victory over Elphin in the first round of the Hodson Bay Senior Championship in Croghan on Friday evening last. This was a good performance from all involved including the five subs that were used and really showed the potential that exists within this team in probably the best performance in a number of years. Boyle started at a frantic pace and never gave Elphin an opportunity to establish any footing in the game. The first half saw Enda Smith hit the Elphin net twice when he sliced through the their defence. Donie added a number of frees on a day when he hit 8 frees in total and added one from play. The second half saw Boyle continue to attack from deep and added a third goal from Jim Suffin who finished excellently to all but but  bury any hope of an Elphin revival. Elphin received three red cards in the later stages of the game, with two for fighting and one for abusive language to referee Vivian Hardiman. The only blip on an otherwise flawless day was a late goal conceded. The team and panel on the day was. Cian Smith, Michael Hanmore, David Callaghan, Cillian Cox, Aaron Sharkey, Sean Purcell, Tadhg McKenna, Roch Hanmore, Enda Smith, Jim Suffin, Donie Smith, Tadhg Lowe, Mark McGovern, Darren O'Connor, Mark O'Donohoe, Evan McGrath, Joe Sweeney, Liam Conroy, Colin Goldrick, Brian Furey, with Jason McDermott, Steve Tonry, Tommy McGarrity, Ciaran Beirne, Peter Lavin. They will face Padraig Pearses and St Brigids in the remaining championship games in their group in August. Meanwhile they have two vital O’Rourke Cup games in the coming week. They will travel to Woodmount on Wednesday evening to face Padraig Pearses at 8pm and they will host St Faithleachs in the Abbey Park on Sunday next at 2pm. Stewards will be required to make themselves available for this game from 12.30pm onwards.
The Cooney Motors/ Cooneys Centra Juniors are scheduled to play Kilglass Gaels in the Abbey Park on Saturday evening next in the Division 4 League. The Abbey Park will host a Connacht ladies Football Intermediate Championship Semi Final between Roscommon and Sligo at 7pm on Friday evening next 20th. The Abbey Park successfully hosted an U14 Girls ALL Ireland Semi Final between Limerick and Derry on Saturday last. Thanks to all from both Boyle clubs for helping with the smooth running of the event. Highlight of the weekend was the victory by the U12 Girls in the Division 1B County Championship Final. The €20 winners in this weeks Lotto which was held in Wynnes were Geraldine and Fran McGeogh, Colm Loftus, Michael Hanmore, Justin Mccormack, Simon Archer and the House prize was won by Orla Garvin. Next weeks draw will take place in Lavins and team D will be in charge with the jackpot at €6400. The McGovern Directional Drilling Senior Men's team make their return to the senior championship on Friday when they take on Elphin in Croghan at 8 o clock. This will be a very tough game against a very experienced Elphin team also coupled with the fact that Boyle are missing no less than 13 players who togged for the county final last October, so all support for the lads will be much appreciated. The lads will also be out again in the league on Wednesday week against Pearse's in Woodmount and again the following Sunday at home to St. Faithleach's so a very busy couple of weeks ahead. The Cooney Motors Men's Junior team are scheduled to play Kilglass on the 21st of this month. The under 10 community games team are playing the Balintubber/Ballymoe combination on Wednesday evening. Commiseration's to the Roscommon senior team and Donie and Enda who despite putting it up to Mayo for most of the game eventually succumbed in the end, losing by a point. UPDATE 3rd JUNE 2014

The McGovern Directional Drilling Seniors are in preparation for their Senior Championship outing against Elphin, which will be played in Croghan on Friday week 13th June. The Cooney Motors/ Cooney’s Centra Juniors will have their next Division 4 League fixture against Kilglass Gaels on 21st June.  Congratulations to our neighbours Boyle Celtic on winning Sligo Leitrim Super League. Best wishes to John Evans and the Roscommon Seniors, and especially to our Boyle representatives Donie and Enda and also Gary in the backroom. Best wishes are also extended to all our young players and supporters who will commence their Junior Cert and Leaving Cert exams this week. The U14's were unfortunately beaten in their League Semi-final on Saturday against a strong Tulsk team in Elphin. Boyle were up against it from the off as some of their main players were absent, which is disappointing especially with such an important game, but those who did tog out must be credited for their performance and attitude. In addition  the Boyle cause wasn't helped when Louis Garvin had to be replaced early in the first half through injury. Boyle started brightly and took the lead through a Toams Regan point and should have increased this lead but missed a couple of easy chances. Tulsk registered a goal and three points before Boyle responded with a goal from their full forward Greg Doherty after good work from Adam O'Connor and Kelvin Morris. Tulsk added another goal somewhat questionably this time, as a long free dropped into the square, the referee blew his whistle with the ball in mid air, both sets of players stopped, but the ball ended up in the net, and the goal was allowed leaving this reporter scratching his head, along with many in the stand. Marcus Meehan added a  free for Boyle before Tulsk scored a couple of crucial goals allowing them to put distance between themselves and Boyle. The Boyle sub goalkeeper Enda Carr did his best to keep Tulsk at bay and produced one outstanding save before the half time whistle. The second half saw Boyle much improved and added another goal after good work from Adam Simon. Adam O'Connor added a point soon after that following a long run from Jack Morris. The Boyle midfield of James Bolger and Adam Simon (who inherited his height from his mothers side of the family im guessing!) worked hard in the second half and showed good athleticism by helping out in defence as well as attack. Tomas Regan added another free after he himself was fouled before Tulsk were let in for a few easy scores towards the end of the game, seeing them over the line. Overall the team never gave up and showed a good attitude and work rate. It appeared that Tulsk relied heavly on their centre back, midfield pair and centre forward and unfortunately at times these players were too strong. The league is now over and the team can hopefully take the positives from this performance into the championship. Best on the day for Boyle were the midefield pairing of James Bolger and Adam Simon, Kelvin Morris and Adam O'Connor with Man of the Match shared between right half back Ciaran Calpin and full forward Greg Doherty. The Boyle panel was: Gerard Conway, Killian Doyle, Diarmuid Conway, Martin Kennedy, Ciaran Calpin, Louis Garvin, Tiernan Henry, James Bolger, Adam Simon (C), Marcus Meehan, Kelvin Morris, Adam O'Connor, David Battles, Greg Doherty, Tomas Regan, with Enda Carr, Brian Regan, Sean Brogan, Rees Shanley, Ethan Byrne, Mikey McGrath, Alan Enright
